Atelier ADU

Accessory Dwelling Unite — 3 Bed 1.5 Bath
780 sf
Los Angeles, 2026

The client is a young costume designer who wants to live close to her aging parents, while maintaining her own private, independent, professional life in a city she grew up in.

The goal for this ADU was to create maximum space within a very tight footprint and allowable volume, while making the most creative, productive and inspiring space for a young professional.

Work space consists of (a) Mess space for production (b) Clean space for costume fitting (c) Outdoor work space for fabric dying and (d) guest WC for guests and clients. In addition to all the required spaces, entry sequence from the street to the upper level ‘Atelier’ was carefully designed to maintain professional, creative feel without drawing attention to the private living space, which is literally few feet away.

Maximum amount of storage space and natural light was achieved by keeping the built- in cabinet low (and reachable) and allowing maximum width of clerestory.

Living space with custom sofa doubles up as dining room with stow-away dining table. Gally kitchen doubles as a hallway to the bedroom, creating another ‘wing’ to this super tight but light filled ADU. It’s a tight cabin without cabin fever!
