The client had moved from NYC into a small 700sf Bungalow and it was good for a bit. But the bungalow sits on a large 8300sf lot next to a vacany city property and backs up to a vast underdeveloped land. It was a NYC space on a LA rancho spread. Something had to be done. Critically though, the house was up from the street but still way down from the garden. We figured we had budget for one big move. We designed a long and tall volume that connects the bungalow to the garden with a continuous stair that tags 3 levels. A tall space with an assortment of windows and views into the close by oak tree, into the garden at the top, and to distant valley vistas beyond. Patios and bedrooms peel off at each level and at the top of the stair launches you into a private garden heaven. Stairway to Garden, please hum along! The 1400 sf addition brings the house to 2100 sf 3bed, 2.5 bath house. Perfect for a growing family and a great LA story.
